The one-minute answer
Hiring is worth it in three situations and not otherwise. First, when your material is outside what the City of Brownsville collects, which is a longer list than most residents realise. Pickup rental commonly runs around $19.95 per day plus about $0.79 per mile, plus fuel, plus whatever the counter adds. For a household without a truck, that is the single largest line in the do-it-yourself column and it is the one most often left out of the comparison.
A legal disposal route
The material goes to a permitted facility, with the destination on record. In a city where the illegal dumping ordinance passed December 15, 2009 carries fines up to $2,000 plus abatement, and state penalties escalate to a $10,000 felony tier at 1,000 pounds, the value of that is not abstract.
Risk transfer
Injury is the unpriced cost of do-it-yourself hauling. A refrigerator on a staircase, a hot tub over a fence or a 600 pound upright piano are where people actually get hurt, and no rental saving covers a back injury.

Where the free option runs out
The City of Brownsville program is good and it is genuinely free, but its accepted list is narrow. It takes sofas, tables, chairs, mattresses, washers, dryers, water heaters and stoves, plus tree limbs, shrubs and bagged grass and leaves. That is the whole list.
It refuses construction and demolition debris, roof shingles, sheet rock, concrete, asphalt, lumber, cardboard boxes, liquids, hazardous waste, bricks, dirt, car parts, household garbage, and any Freon-containing appliance without a recovery decal from a certified facility. Look at a real garage, a real remodel or a real storm cleanup and the refusal list describes most of it. That mismatch is where the market for hauling actually exists.
Timing is the second limit. Four sectors served one per week on a rotating monthly cycle means your street sees the truck roughly once a month, and material must be set out a full week before your collection week. Two reasons the answer differs in the Valley

The rotation is slower than most cities
A monthly sector rotation is a longer wait than the weekly or fortnightly bulky collection many American cities run. That widens the gap between the free route's schedule and yours, and it is the main structural reason Brownsville households end up paying for something their cousin in another city gets collected next Tuesday.
How to pick an operator if you do hire
Four questions, asked of every quote, sort the market quickly. Does the price include labour, or only transport? Does it include disposal and tipping? Is it confirmed before loading begins rather than revised after? And where specifically does the material go?
