The Freon decal rule, and why your fridge is still on the curb

The City of Brownsville will not take a refrigerator, freezer, window AC unit or central AC unit unless it carries a decal from a certified facility proving a professional recovered the refrigerant. This is the single most common reason a Brownsville household ends up calling a private hauler, and almost nobody knows about it until the truck has already driven past their appliance.

The rule exists because venting refrigerant to atmosphere is a federal violation. The city has no way to verify a unit was handled correctly except by requiring documentary proof, and the decal is that proof.
